The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave details the progression of a slave to a man, and thus, the formation of his identity. The narrative functions as a persuasive essay, written in the hopes that it would successfully lead to â€Å"hastening the glad day of deliverance to the millions of [his] brethren in bonds† (Douglass 331). As an institution, slavery endeavored to reduce the men, women, and children â€Å"in bonds† to a state less than human. The slave identity, according to the institution of slavery, was not to be that of a rational, self forming, equal human being, but rather, a human animal whose purpose is to work and obey the whims of their â€Å"master.† For these reasons, Douglass articulates a distinction†¦show more content†¦The effect of this passage, in addition to introducing the idea that slaves were considered to be no more civilized than animals, is an emphasis on Douglass’s lack of a human identit y. As a slave, his role was that of an animal whose purpose was to work for his â€Å"master.† This internalization of the animal/slave role is accentuated further when Douglass discusses the slave’s notion of time as â€Å"planting-time, harvest-time, cherry-time, spring-time, or fall-time† (Douglass 255). The institution of slavery, which forced the comparison of slave to animal, required the slave to consider time in terms of his master—time to work, time to plant, time to harvest. Thus, slaves were unable to utilize a concept of time of their own making to identify themselves because their concepts of time reflected what was important to their â€Å"masters† and not to themselves. By representing the slaves as relying on their â€Å"masters’† wishes to identify themselves, Douglass emphasizes the comparison between slave and animals. Not only does the slave concept of time reflect the desire of the â€Å"masters’† to have the slaves view time in terms of work, but it also reflects the â€Å"masters’† refusals to allow slaves to define themselves historically. Douglass writes that slaves were unable to articulate their ages, the dates of births and deaths of family members, and their lengths of service. It was hard to rationalize how I’d made it thus far, a bulky backpack overflowing with books and black gel pens, a head full of dreams, and a list of possibilities that seemed far too endless. However, Disney was confronted with a major crisis in its past when first operating its EuroDisney park near Paris. Insufficient knowledge of the European culture and the buying behavior of potential visitors of the theme park led to an overestimation of the number of visitors and their spending in the park. In addition, operating costs turned out to be higher than expected. The company was able to overcome this crisis. The park now operates under the name Disneyland Paris and its operating income contributes to the high success of the theme park business. In November 1999 the Walt Disney Corporation and Hong Kong signed the first agreements concerning the opening of a Disneyland amusement park in Hong Kong in the year 2005. The undertaking will be a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. Disney will own 43% of the shares and Hong Kong 57%. Both parties are optimistic that this co-operation will result in a win-win situation. Hong Kong is going to invest a high amount of money in the venture both directly and indirectly. Directly by investing in the construction of the park itself, and indirectly by renewing the infrastructure of the city to the park and investing in a new tourism strategy, that enhances the citys attractiveness as an international tourist destination. For me, as much as I wanted to dismiss it, something kept niggling my mind that this might be a true prophetic scrutiny of the state of Nigeria. Not because the CIA is dependable in its security analysis, after all, they didnt get it right to prevent 9/11 2001 from happening, but events in Nigeria seemed to suggest that while other countries in the sub-region were developing, Nigeria was retrogressing despite its claim to democracy. People expected the then Government of Obasanjo to take this warning as a chance for Nigeria to look inwards, engage with the report, and work on those predictive indices that could lead to the predicted failure. But, inopportunely, the Obasanjo government dismissed the report in its totality. In a way, the dismissal is not entirely a surprise, since our leaders, over the years, are prone to such habits of shielding the truth from their people, not caring as long as it does not happen in their time; are actually very ignorant of what is going on around them, and are obstinate and tyrannical in their nature. The current general state of insecurity in Nigeria has now lent weight to the report. It must be recalled that while the report was released at the advent of the so-called Niger Delta crisis, since then several acts of bombings and killings by the extremist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, the carnage between ethnic Birom and the Hausa/Fulani in Jos, and the political violence that followed immediately after the 2011 Elections results, mostly in the northern part of the country, have further cemented the insecure state of the country. Starting with the usual religious/ethnic oriented conflicts, to the Jos ethnic/religious/political conflict of 2008, regrettably, the northern states have shown that security of persons and properties is still far from being realizable. However, the current crisis which started in Bauchi and has engulfed other states in the north has elements of theocratic opinionated ambitions in it. While the fundamentalist group Boko Harams demand for the jettisoning of a western behavioral pattern and the imposition of strict Sharia law can be described as absurd to say the least, we should equally view it with all the seriousness it deserves. What the current trend of violence is imprinting on the psyche of Nigerians is that the government security apparatus is incapable of guaranteeing the safety and security of its people. This would, therefore, impact on the general human security of the people as the situation promotes fear, while at the same time limiting the peoples ability to develop economically. At the same time, the states capacity to attract investors becomes limited as a result of the insecurity. But the rioting, mostly in the North, that followed immediately after his election raised questions, which are still unanswered, about security preparedness. At least 800 people were said to have been killed in these Muslim-Christian electoral violence. â€Å"As president, it is my solemn duty to defend the constitution of this country. That includes the obligation to protect the lives and properties of every Nigerian wherever they choose to live,† he said Challenges amp; Proposed Solutions: Mr. President should acknowledge the failure of the security agencies hence there should be a complete overhaul of the Security Agencies in the county to pre-empt these security breaches. The Western region has clearly set the  pace going by the result of the  last election. All the Western states voted massively for the Action Congress party (ACN), a party that  is not sufficiently  different  in programmes from the Action Party of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Each region should have their own police Force. MOPOL and Interpol  could be transformed into the only Federal Police crack elite team. The rest members of the police force should be dismembered and directed to return to their regions. It is  the duty of the regions to now retrain, equip and pay them. Second, the judiciary is not helping matters at all. This institution  is heavily  compounding our problems. It has got to really sit up. Cases of corruption are not  meant to be compromised at all, let alone adjourning them endlessly. The judiciary ought to have, at this stage in our development, evolved time scales  for cases. There  ought to have been  a time to determine a case; time to close that case; and time to deliver  judgment and pass sentences. In Nigeria, cases that bother on corruption and insecurity have most often been compromised thus the law is no longer acting as a deterrent. What is happening in Jos is too gory to narrate. From Shagari to Yar ‘Adua and now to Jonathan, what we have heard were leaders handpicked and imposed on the people. We have over the years been denied leaders that would bring us out of the woods. First were Awo in 1979 and, controversially, Abiola in 1993. We have never had it so bad. OBJ was an imposition by the Northern oligarchy. Corruption was commonplace under OBJ. Now under Jonathan, what we have is intertwined corruption and insecurity. Ethnic and the foregoing problems and criminal activities individually and collectively create insecurity and breach of the peace that are likely to or indeed affect legitimate social and economic activities in the country. These problems also have the very damaging consequence of giving the signal to the rest of the international community that Nigeria is not a safe and secure place and as such not suitable for economic investment and activities. This is particularly important in view of the efforts being made to create the desired atmosphere to attract foreign investment. Beyond the effects of security concerns on the economic fortunes of the country, the nature of the security challenges facing the country also have implications for the countrys political system. As mentioned earlier, social cohesion among various groups and interests is important in the process of national political development. Therefore, the constituent parts of the country must be and indeed feel that they are being carried along in the process of national governance. Experience has shown that widespread discontent and loss of confidence in the system have ways of affecting national political stability. Invariably continuing escalation of violence and crises across the country will impinge on the survival of our democracy. Accordingly, there is the challenge to rethink and improve on policy and institutional means of dealing with security concerns arising in the country. At the political level, the federal, state and local governments should evolve programmes of cultural and political education and orientation that seek to enthrone the fundamentals of democracy so that the political contestants as well as the generality of the citizens imbibe principles and practices essential for sustainable democracy. Such programmes must also address specific tendencies that create security breach and concerns in the country. In addition, a process of legislative and constitutional review should be initiated to assess the countrys constitution and amend or expunge as necessary areas that have been found to give rise to conflicts and security problems. The process should also introduce new provisions and legislations that will ensure better and more effective interplay of interests among all groups and stakeholders in Nigeria. Such exercise should also embrace ways of making the countrys democratic space more open, free, fair and tolerant as exists in other democracies around the world. Among specific lingering political issues that should be addressed are: the laws relating to political parties and their activities; the establishment, funding and activities of the electoral body; local and state government relationship; allocation of national resources and revenue; citizenship rights; devolution of security powers to states and local governments. In addition, the legislative and constitutional review should also embody security sector reforms that will make the security agencies and institutions more effective in combating crimes and other threats to national security and make them accountable to the democratic political system and structures. These democratic structures include the states and local governments. I believe that we need to give a more concrete understanding to the definition of governors as the chief security officers of the state. In all, what we need is a good government, no more no less. And a good government is possible in as much as people who are put in positions of authority are allowed and are committed to discharge their duties without fear or favors; are determined to serve with zeal and patriotism; are not ready to sell out to international capital and are ready to stand by the truth and die for it. In all, there is no mono cultural theory that is a cure-all to the diverse nature of insecurity in Nigeria but I believed and stand by the theory that Nigeria should evolve into six regions, each region having its Premier or Governor, each region has a right to retain its states or to abolish- the choice is theirs in the region to make; each region should be in charge of its Education,  Security, Health, Agriculture, Housing, Transport and Energy policies.

It is a crime against humanity and yet it happens all over the world on a regular basis. Human trafficking is a global issue in accordance with the UNDOC report; anyone can be a victim of human trafficking irrespective of age, care, culture, political affiliation, religion, occupation and gender. As it turns out, women are the majority of the victims as well as the culprits (Akaha 12). It is confusing to imagine that former victims are also victims of the same irrespective of the pain they underwent during the trafficking process; they emulate their exploiters and get influenced due to the huge amounts of money in return after a successful human traffic. Human trafficking is organized crime hence should be dealt with through criminals to get to the base of things (Kara 67). The major challenges faced in the war against human trafficking includes: raising awareness, gathering information, and international cooperation. I propose a way to raise more awareness because the gravity of this international situation needs to be communicated widespread (McKanders 2). Rai sing awareness Human trafficking is a global issue that calls for a globally acknowledged strategy of creating awareness on the issue; different countries are faced with different problematic situations that would likely favor human trafficking (McKanders 4). People are faced with challenges because the targeted group perceives that not all offers to work overseas are fraudulent, moreover, through beach parties and vocational leaves, traffickers engage young adults of both sexes with infatuation just to enable them win their instinct (Brysk 54). Efforts to counsel such individuals on the dangers of being in love with strangers of unknown backgrounds are often thwarted by rebellion and departure to settle in other areas with the partners away from the counselors who are later termed as enemies (Akaha 15). Gathering information There are scanty information about human trafficking since people fear that conveying mush information on the same would create suspicion on the kind of work t hat such individual are involved in for their daily survival. I believe it is very important to acquire accurate information on the issue to achieve the aforementioned plan (McKanders 3). FOLLOWING ARE THE PRINCIPLES INVOLVED IN THE PERSON CENTERED APPROACH TO DEMENTIA- Individuality- an individual person should never be assumed. And the organization should not except that the person is or have to fit in with anyone or with the organization. People should have their own right to make their own choices, they should be given right to think about themselves. Their likes and dislikes should always be kept in mind. What are the differences between the neighbours, and other people, should be understood. And if they have different ethnicity or religious beliefs, they should be respected. Rights-the clients or residents in the care should always be allowed to enjoy the same rights. It’s not only when they are dependent on the carers but also when they are living their live independently. Every individual we look after or support can refuse the things they don’t want, or in other words they have the right to say no, the right to keep any relationship, the right to refuse their care. But it’s important to maintain the balance between their rights against their responsibilities.it is important to find the balance as it makes easier to find if they are at risk or not? Choices- Every person we are supporting or look after should be given freedom to make choices. They should be given proper information, so that they can make safe choices, and acknowledge the benefits of their decisions. Privacy- privacy is the major principle that should be kept in mind, while looking after a person. Knock the door and get permission before entering the room. Make sure any other person enters the room with invitation only. During personal hygiene Closing the doors and drawing the curtains should be kept in mind. They should be provided with privacy for example, letters, phone calls, communication with visitors and while reading mails etc. Independence- Independence makes people more live, they feel as if they have control on their live. Carers should allow the people to do things themselves, it could be of any type big small, doesn’t matter. Being independent does not mean staying alone or isolating a person. It means that a person is given enough time to do for themselves. They should not be forced to do the things quickly, but on the other hand they should be given sufficient time, to maintain their independence. Dignity-: it refers to the respecting the client and and having self-respect. It includes ever minor thing that plays an important role in day to day life. It could be related to anything eating, sleeping, living day-to-day, and dying. It includes that the care givers should maintain our quality of life, while supporting a client. They should be aware of maintain a person’s dignity, careers should ask their client how they wish to be addressed, carers should take their time to listen them, use of towel while caring them, offering them regular shave. Respect-making someone that you care and support them is very important, supporting them in every single aspect for example whatever is the age, cultural difference, disability, gender, belief or sexual preference, etc. A carer should not ignore the client’s needs while looking after a client. They should listen them, give them importance, ask about their choices, what would they be called as, how they should be cared, etc. Autonomy Working together with other agencies, colleagues and families to support the client. Non person centered approach to dementia- Non-Person-centered care is an approach that does not care for the clients ,respects and honors the unique qualities, interests, and needs of each person – it is of one-size fits all approach to care. Person-centered dementia care does not refers to the approach and practices used for people who are living with dementia, but it includes the two perspectives- Institution perspective Bio-medical perspective Institution perspective Every person with dementia have different set of abilities and care needs and it gets worst with change of time. Institution perspective, is care that is provided in the care home. Person can experience joy, comfort in rest homes, they are cared in the rest homes etc. Bio-medical perspective A person that shows some behavioral changes needs proper medical evaluation, especially when symptoms occurs all of a sudden. Bio medical perspective includes, treatment, drugs, the medication etc. Reality –orientation approach To reducing confusion in geriatric patients, Reality Orientation approach is used as treatment in dementia client. Confusion amongst the client includes-(a) under stimulation of the patient, (b) lack of normal behavior (c) desired behavior. It works with the presentation by asking client about various things e.g. time, place and person-related, which tells about the understanding of the person, sense of control. There has been criticism of RO in clinical practice, with some fear that it has been applied in a mechanical fashion and has been insensitive to the needs of the individual.it is thought that reality orientation can cause mood and self-esteem problems. Validation approach Validation method is a way in which there is interaction with people with the dementia in the last stages of Alzheimers. People with Alzheimers have incomprehensible, behavior, sometimes they have abnormal behavior, and there is mood swing amongst the clients. For example, they may start thinking that they are living in a different time or place. Sometimes they may repeat physical gesture. Sometimes they may repeat the things again and again .and many people think that while handling these type of clients care givers should ignore their behavior or correct them. Assistive technologies A hoists the most commonly used aids. They are used by the people who are not able to move at all, and most of the time they are heavy and hard for single person to handle. Secondly walker based device. Thirdly touch-screen, fourthly technologies are used to monitor vital signs and basic metabolic parameters (e.g., temperature) multiple parameters simultaneously (e.g., pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, blood glucose).Alarm systems occurs to alert caregivers of a fall e.g.-sensor matt. Holistic approach- Holistic care simply means addressing all aspects body, mind, and spirit of the person. A holistic approach links mainstream medical treatments with both herbal supplements and attention to emotional health. Before health promotion strategies mainly focused on lifestyle programs. But later health promotion practice mainly focused on Human rights, health and improving health equality, Diversity. Health promotion action provides a set of values, tools (knowledge and skills) and practice. A number of models useful for health promotion action include: Te Whare TapaWha (Durie et al., 1982) Te Pae Mahutonga (Durie, 2004) Te Wheke (Rose Pere, 1984) TU-HANZ – Health Promotion Forum (Martin, 2002) Public health and health promotion- Values and beliefs about health and wellbeing provides health promotion. Health care access is a supply side issue indicating the level of service which the health care system offers every individual with access to health care .In newzleand health care system follows the centralized approach where all the individuals are able to access health care, while inequalities in health care is said to be access persist. This approach is made for a person so that they are able to continue their daily activities that may lead to healthy living, it also helps in maintain the independence of the client. That is the reason why individual assessment of the client is necessary and care plans are set and play an important role. To understand a client, health care team not only see medical records, but also health conditions, as well as history of the client. Family and friends can help in getting the information about a person. Such type of information becomes beneficial for the care givers and the nurses who are looking after them. Comprehensive patient assessments should be the important for care givers and for dementia treatment. For example, Care Givers use a social history form to evaluate the needs and interests of a person with dementia, and then promote clients’ health care. Knowing a person’s family situation, such as marital status and every single detail, can help care givers to have proper interactions with their patients and provide them proper care. Ties to the community can help as well. Keeping a patient involved with their religious groups, local organizations can help an individual to interact with their community. Alzheimer’s disease, develop emotional distant and affects the regular interaction. But having professional caregiver who are able to engage the client in daily activities enjoys interactions with family members. People living with dementia usually suffer and struggle with self-awareness. Different roles and hobbies develop their confidence and ensure feeling of accomplishment and purpose. Care providers familiar with their patient’s hobbies and interest make their individual routine. For example aby as her dementia, she began symptoms of depression. A Care Giver working with aby learned from her family that aby was once interested in gardening, so the caregiver provided her with plastic pots, gloves, soil and seedlings. She even helped aby in doing gardening, and noticed that she involved in everything that was related to gardening. And aby on the other side was able to continue with her favorite hobby, as a result Abby’s mood improved and she was able to sleep all night. And she was able to add more meaningful activities. Dementia can often cause a feeling of being lost. But a meaningful interaction can improve the person with dementia. A professional caregiver knows how to encourage independence. For example if a person is having dementia, care givers should be ready to handle the situation, trying showing and explaining everything related to the procedure. Some people with dementia want to participate in their own care. Brushing teeth, could became a tough task for dementia people, but a professional caregiver prepare a toothbrush with toothpaste and help Serena brush her teeth. This type of environment helps person to get back their sense of security about their place. Family of the dementia client should be helped, they should be given regular awareness about dementia and lectures, of handling these kind of people. Art as Expression Essay -- Art

Artists are central to cultural, political and social discourses in the world. They are here not only to inspire us, but to provoke us as well. Four artists that broke social, political and cultural barriers were, Rene Magritte, John Heartfield Jackson Pollock and Otto Dix. While the artists were involved in different movements, each one made revolutionary statements with their works. Artists have a responsibility to use their works as a weapon to the status quo and to break these cultural and social barriers. Rene Magritte and John Heartfield were important figures to the Surrealist movement. Surrealism was a movement that developed after World War II and as a result, society was requesting art that was of the ‘norm’ to give the world a sense of stability. As a reaction to this request, the artists helped influence the Surrealist movement. It is often described as rebellious, idiosyncratic, dream-like and emotional. Maggritte’s thought-provoking pieces, and Heartfield’s anti-war messages all sent a strong message to society. Rene Magritte was a Belgian surrealist painter who was known for painting thought-provoking works that require viewers to question the most mundane aspects of life, including familiar objects such as a tobacco pipe. Magritte wanted his viewers to question the perceptions of reality and if art has the ability to truly represent an object. He believed that even the best artists could not paint an object, because it would always only be a representation of that image. If an artist drew an apple, it was only a representation of an apple, because the viewer could not eat it. In 1929, Magritte painted â€Å"The Treachery of Images†; at first glance appears to be an advertisement of a tobacco product, but underneath t... ...uld be considered: what would the art world look like now if no artist took a risk to express his or her political and social ideologies? Would artists just be creating art their society wants? Would there be any rebellion? Pollock would have painted with a paintbrush, Magritte would not have questioned our perceptions of reality and Dix and Heartfield would not have questioned the motives of politics. It is critical for artists to push these limits, no matter the criticism they will endure. Change management simulation Essay

As the rapid development of modern economy and the increasingly fierce market competition, the demand of how to manage organization change is increasing. Especially for leaders in both large and small companies, the ability of dealing with change is so significant. In many case, the main reason for company bankruptcy is that leaders fail to cope with organization environment change properly. The demise of many fortune 500 companies in the 1980s and 1990s suggests that the leaders of these companies were ineffective in responding to changes in the business environment; they were unable to overcome rigidities in their firms until it was too late. (Beer, M. & N. Nohria. 2000) In order to improve my learning about managing organization change, I did change management simulation four days ago. Then I am going to talk about the detail of my stimulation. In this simulation, I was the CEO of Spectrum Sunglass Company. For this company, the future is bright due to the growing sunglass market. However, from many professional articles I read, I learned that sustainable development is significant for business, our company should offer some new sunglass products to customers who concern about Spectrum’s environmental impact. Moreover, new products can also differentiate our products from competitors’ and provide us more sales opportunities. But unfortunately, some of my colleagues doesn’t agree with my points, the CFO of my company thinks green raw materials may be so expensive that will influence the profit margins of Spectrum. Then my  mission is to persuade Spectrum’s managers to adopt my proposal. PROCESS RECORDING Week 0 – Week 2 Firstly, I conducted private interviews, I interview Michelle Barth, the executive assistant; Nancy Kerr, the director of product innovation and Yao Li, the director of process innovation. For my assistant, I think I should discuss with her first if I have a proposal. And the other two people are in innovation department, it’s easier for them to accept my opinion than others. After that, I told a ‘success’ story to the three same people to convince them deeply and hope them help me persuade other colleagues. Successful diversity need strong commitment from top management. (Beer, M., R. A. Eisenstat, & B. Spector, 1990) Week 3 to Week 5 In the third week, I issued an email notice to the whole company to tell them my opinion and obtain initial feedback from them. I think it’s important to let them understand my opinion and persuade them to support my opinion. Then I hold town hall meetings to talk about my opinion face to face, to know my colleague’s opinion, after that week, walk the talk was followed. Week 7 – Week 9 In the seventh week, I got the consultant’s support, at this time, the people who was interested in my opinion was greatly increased. From the seventeenth week to the ninety week, I provide both external skill-building and internal skill-building to some people in our organization, the purpose is to let them know well about the skill that my proposal needs and make them believe the advantage of my proposal, after these two levers I used, some people began to adopt my proposal. I think these two levers are effective. Week 13 In the thirtieth week, I announced goals and deadlines of Spectrum. I told my company my determination to change, to produce new products. After that, five people began to try my opinion. Week 23 Ten weeks later, I revised reward system, I hope I can use a special way to let them know the significance of changing. After that, I repeated to use the former effective levers to persuade my colleagues. Week 64 – Week 65 In the sixty four week, I posted progress reports of my company, to show the development of the new product, two more people adopted my proposal. At this time, I have already achieved most people’s adoption, in order to convince more people, I decided to continue my work. I also conducted pilot project the following week, I want to see the marketing condition of the new sunglass product, to find its drawbacks and relative developing ways. Week 74 – Week 75 In the seventy four week, I privately confront resister Louise Orysh to ask his opinion about new products and why she doesn’t adopt it, to know the weakness of the new product and how to reform. Then I restructured organization the following week. Week 91 – Week 93 During the ninety one to ninety three weeks, I provided internal skill-building and external building again, and then, my initiative achieved all the managers’ adoption. CHANGING MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT Now I will assess my work. As a change agent, I have 20 adopters of sustainability initiative in the management team at Spectrum, I persuaded all the managers adopt my proposal successfully. I have succeed in bringing about a significant organization change and creating a bright future for both Spectrum and the environment. So, I think I am an effective change agent. But I also have some deficiencies on my changing management practices. Although I attained 20 adaptors, I spend 93 weeks to get this result, it’s really a long time. The change efficiency ratio is only 0.22. I have to say my work is effective but not efficient, I still need to shorten working time to improve change efficiency. The flexibility and speed is also important in changing management. (Kanter, R. M., B. Stein & T. D. Jick. 1992.) From managing organizational change, I learned that the need for knowledge about how to manage organization change efficiently and effectively is continually rising. If there was a code that could unlock our understanding how change might best be changed, it hadn’t yet be broken. (Beer, M. & N. Nohria. 2000) But break the code may be not the best way to  manage change. The core of organization change is that change what is invalid and remain what is effective. A successful organization know how to overcome the antibody of refusing innovation, seize appropriate opportunities and avoid risks. Furthermore, the central challenge is not strategy, not systems, not culture. These elements and many others can be very important, but the core problem without question is behavior. (Kotter, J. & D. Cohen. 2002.) So changing behavior is the core of changing organization management. Revitalization is one kind of organization change, it involves enhancing the abilities of and contributions made by, managers, workers, and the organization sa a whole to cope with an increasingly competitive environment. (Beer, M. 1990) In summary, I still have some deficiency during this change management simulation.
